In a big house, there lived a big cat. All the mice were afraid of
her. All day, they hid in their holes. Even in the dark, they were
scared to come out for food.
At last, all the mice got together to talk over the matter. They
wanted to find a way of making their lives safer and happier.
"I will tell you what to do," squeaked a young mouse. "Let us
hang a bell around the cat's neck. When she walks, the bell will
ring. That will warn us to run away." The mice thought this
was a fine plan. They whisked their tails and squeaked with joy.
Then a wise old mouse got up."That is all well," he said, "but
